Hidden Allergens in Everyday Life (It’s Not Just Food!)

When Everett was first diagnosed, I thought food labels would be my biggest battle. Pretty quickly, I learned allergens can sneak into everyday, non-food items too—things I never would have even thought about.

Everyday Products to Watch:

  • Pet food & treats — many contain dairy, egg, or peanut.

  • Personal care items — soaps, lotions, shampoos, lip balms can hide milk proteins or nut oils.

  • Arts & crafts supplies — if you have a younger child in daycare or preschool, this one is big. Teachers may think only about snack/lunch, but activities like homemade playdough, “elephant foam,” shaving cream play, or whipped cream sensory bins can all contain allergens.

When Everett started preschool, I felt like a “crazy mom” asking to see the commercial-grade hand soap. Looking back, it was the right instinct—because safety doesn’t stop at the lunch table.

Tips for Managing Hidden Allergens

Ask upfront. Talk with teachers, daycare staff, and caregivers about activities beyond food.

  1. Read every label. Just like with packaged food, check ingredients on lotions, soaps, and even craft supplies.

  2. Offer alternatives. Suggest safe substitutes for playdough or sensory play so your child can still join in.

  3. Trust your gut. You’re not being overprotective—you’re being proactive.

Six years in, I can say this: it does get easier. The more you know, the more empowered you’ll feel. Hidden allergens are frustrating, but once you’re aware, you can take simple steps to keep your child safe.

You’ve got this.

Here’s to making allergy life a little simpler, one day at a time.
